soundtrack required.

it's happening again. the wanderlust is taking hold. this time, i also feel the need to collect a soundtrack of songs about places so that i play myself into cities, towns, states and provinces while roving. your suggestions are welcomed and encouraged, dear reader. so haul 'em out - states, provinces, cities, counties, mountain ranges...

so far i have some white stripes, sufjan stevens, cub, soul coughing, neko case, glenn miller, brenda khan, michelle shocked and nick cave on my list. what have you got to add?

of note: i am pretty much confined to the united states and canada on this trip.

Oh god...you're talking to the right person...

I'll start with one suggestion and think of others soon. I listened to them all day yesterday and have been rather obsessed with them lately-- The Everly Brothers. They have a million songs about Kentucky (that's where they're from), and one of my favourite songs of there's is called "T for Texas." Both Kentucky and Texas songs can be found on the amazing 1968 album, Roots.

Wait...I thought of another one before even finishing that sentance...Gene Clark's "Los Angeles" and X's "Los Angeles."

ACK! I could do this all day!

i totally thought of you when i posted this question. you and my friend al hoff.

let this query just sit here to be filled in as we think of things.

Oh no! Haha
I can make you CDs, but I'm too obsessive and have too much music. Can you give me some specific quest? One state? Cities named for people? Dream up some tough categories, please! I love making mix CDs.
Sadly, my Songs About Canada got wiped out in computer crash.

no! i need every song about ever place ever. okay, i need the best song about each place - the one that really sums it up.

Hmm, I have an idea ... but if you think of a fun category you should let me know.

what about "canadian lover" by destroyer (totally amazing) and "canada" by low? do songs about whole countries count?

ohohoh... One Great City!, The Weakerthans. Washington DC, Magnetic Fields. Angel from Montgomery, John Prine. Poughkeepsie, Over the Rhine. Istanbul (Not Constantinople), They Might Be Giants (a bit far afield, but, c'mon, so good). Albuquerque Lullaby, Dan Bern. Indiana Wants Me, R. Dean Taylor.

What about Road to Nowhere, Talking Heads?

washington, dc, already made my list, but the rest are new. i also can't find my copy of cub's new york city so i only have the they might be giants version.

shan, can i come over for music and a chalkboard this afternoon/evening? maybe this should be a private conversation.

I second Shannon on The Weakerthans. Not sure if you'll be going to/through Manitoba, but I think they would work for the prairies in general (says the girl from Ontario).

I especially recommend Reconstruction Site by them, if only for the song from the perspective of cat.

we started our recent road trip to the Maritimes with Canned Heat, On The Road Again. I also really likes listening to Snowblink's Long Live album really loud, driving at night.
