it's alive! (or the security envelope project has its coming out party).

well, world. it has finally happened. the security envelope project i have be obsessing over has come into being with its first gallery showing. the piece pictured above is a 17 x 17 (289) button grid installed with nails and magnets at the ontario crafts council as part of the group show, diwhy?

the show opens today and runs through march 1st at the crafts council gallery (990 queen street west). aitor and i went today to drop off a spinning rack of button sets - yes you can buy the sets of three themselves for $6 at the gallery for the duration of the run. this gave us a great chance to poke around. i'm really into the whole thing. i was especially excited to get to put the first few stitches in miriam grenville's lovely diy wall paper.

you should go see it all.

my goodness, that is beautiful. i want to see it for realsies.

the shots of the nails are also beautiful, but i reckon that has to do with your oh so stellar photographin' skills. also, the topographical canadiana ones - sorry, i'd post on ever missed entry but i'm in a dingy backstage room and time is not on my side.

love from koln, l

these photographs are amazing. the whole thing is amazing - i love the shadows & the elevation. i better get over there and look at it sans swarm on the 5th.

as for my vote - this is tough. i say post the 3rd one down & maybe the 5th as well for detail.

thank you guys! thank you so much.

and obviously, thank you to all the people whose envelope contributions made this project what it was (i am still finishing up on sending out rewards).

but, renee, i would play around with other materials before trying to hang coats on/open drawers with these. as it is, this is a look-but-don't-touch-so-much arrangement. although you could take the buttons off and wear them out on the town if you wanted. but don't do that at the gallery.

How wonderful ! I can just imagine the patience it took to align them all perfectly !!!

It must be a very interesting show !

just curious, are these buttons waterproof?

Wow! That looks even most amazing than I had pictured it! Love it. I can even see one of the patterns I sent you (the teal flags).
Hope the show goes really well!

jun - although these buttons have a mylar coating, the metal in them will rust if exposed to too much water. that said, i have a few that have gone through the washer and dryer a couple times by mistake and survived it just fine. but i wouldn't recommend getting them wet.

michelle - i love the teal flags!
